My old leather shoe was no longer wearable because the pin on the buckle was missing - a small and yet so important part without which the strap would not hold. ‘Taken to the cobbler and quickly repaired’, I thought. Far from it. The tiny part doesn't seem to be in every repair box.

I took my shoes with me when I visited my parents in the Harz Mountains. My mum's tip about the saddlery in Ballenstedt turned out to be a stroke of luck. I got my shoe back repaired within a day.

When you enter the shop, you can really feel the love for the craft. The owner welcomes you with humour and charm, accompanied by Johnny Cash songs. Some of the shop's utensils hint at an American flavour. But it is the calmness, quality and willingness to find solutions that are more impressive. The unique, quaint shop, which combines a workshop and salesroom, stands out and takes you back in time.
