Miner's tradition on the Silver Route
Every year on the 2nd weekend in Advent, Schneeberg attracts its visitors to a very special Christmas festival with a miners‘ parades and typical craft traditions. Even as a child, it was an experience to “drive over” to Schneeberg and celebrate the spectacle. A lot of hustle and bustle, but certainly an experience you won't forget.
The miners' custom of lighting up the dark season with candlelight (Lichtl) continues to be practised, especially at Christmas time. Their desire for light is expressed in the many window illuminations.
The splendour of the illuminated houses and the spire of St. Wolfgang's Church, with its impressive Lucas Cranach altar, shines out from afar.
The miner's choir, the tower trumpeters and the Bergkapelle determine the sounds of Christmas together with the organ of St Wolfgang's Church, whose ringing bells call to the Advent hustle and bustle.
In the centre of the market square with its baroque town houses is the Christmas market with the typical pyramid, which sets its miners' figures in an Ore Mountain scene. All around, the candle arches, stars and figures shine in every window. Hidden in the courtyard of the lace design is a fine treasure, the old guardhouse with its former prison.
The Schneeberg craft guild offers unique creativity: glove making, wood sculptors, wood carving, pyramid making, lace making and lace making courses, pewter casting and a workshop with a café. The village fair and the Christmas mountain in the Museum of Mining Folk Art and the miniature mining landscape at the Huthaus in Neustädtel are sure to make your eyes light up.
