Ore Mountains like in a fairy tale

Annaberg-Buchholz was also part of our Advent journey along the Silver Route. At Christmas, the historic mining town comes to life in typical style. It shines in the splendour of the festivities, lights and tradition. All the preparations culminate in a Christmas magic that makes the heart beat faster.

Annaberg Christmas market

The Christmas market's little houses are decorated in The Ore Mountains style. The pyramid rotates its figures in a circle, telling stories of town personalities and mining - and can be admired in the truest sense when the market opens for the first time. The biblical Christmas carol finds its uniquely illustration in four large wooden reliefs. Not forgetting the original craftsmanship from the region, the music of the brass and Bergkapelle bands with their traditional costumes and the big miners' parade on the 4th Advent.

The Christmas town is particularly eye-catching, colourfully displaying typical scenes from the region like a picture book. A marvel of craftsmanship, lovingly decorated.

The impressive, late Gothic St Annenkirche church resounds with Christmas concerts and organ music. The imposing ribbed vault and the ancient altar skilfully draw the eye. The "beautiful door" with its unique wood-carved scenes from the Bible will also amaze you. And as if that wasn't enough, there is a highlight waiting on the tower - a magical panorama of the town and the Ore Mountains.

The St. Marien Bergkirche (St Mary's Mountain Church) is home to a very interesting miners' nativity scene, and not just for craft enthusiasts. The life-size wooden figures come together to tell the story of life and work in their region.

The life of the miners underground can be experienced above all in the “Frohnauer Hammer” - an original mine. We often travelled there with friends and family, as it impressively represents the essence of the Ore Mountains and its ‘miners’. Their desire for light is expressed particularly in winter and at Christmas time in the form of the candle arch and the window lights.

We stayed at the "Wilder Mann" inn, which is located in the historic old town directly on the market square with its Wilhelminian style – just a short walk away from the Christmas market. As one of the oldest town houses, it enchants with its elaborately designed vaulted ceilings. And next door in the "Neinerlaa" you can sit comfortably and enjoy the typical "Neunerlei" (eating nine different things).
