A marvel of architecture

The world's largest brick bridge is located in the Vogtland district of Saxony, in the south-east of Germany. The imposing stone giant gracefully spans the Göltzsch Valley, connecting the towns of Reichenbach and Netzschkau on the Leipzig-Hof railway line.

The mystical and picturesque beauty can be wonderfully experienced in the early morning at sunrise. This is when the first rays of sunlight pierce through the clouds, creating a composition of colours that could not be more beautiful than in a painting by Caspar David Friedrich.

Constructed between 1846 and 1851, the builders Robert Wilke, Ferdinand Dost, and Johannes Andreas Schubert immortalized themselves through this feat of engineering. With a height of 78 metres and 98 arches spanning four tiers, the marvel inspires a sense of awe.

The journey to the poetry of engineering is worthwhile! ...also to its little sister, the Elstertal bridge...
